Nkulee Dube tops the List of Nominees for the 31st IRAWMA Awards

South African Nkulee Dube, daughter of the late reggae star Lucky Dube top the list of nominees in six categories for the 31st International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA), Although, CNN earlier broke the news of her nomination, no one knew that she was the top nominee. She became the first non-Caribbean entertainer to have been nominated in that many categories. She is selected for; Best Female Vocalist, Best Song, Best Album, Best Video, Best New Entertainer and Most Promising Entertainer.

She is followed by Tarrus Riley and Mavado, each with four nods. Damian Marley, Third World, Queen Ifrika, Stephen Marley, Fab 5, Ziggy Marley and Machel Montano, each picked up three honors. Other multiple nominees includes: Freddy McGregor, Jimmy Cliff, Laza Morgan, Marcia Griffiths, I-Octane, Sean Paul, BeenieMan, Tiana, The Green, Rihanna, Shaggy, Richie Spice, Protoje, Gentleman, Spice, Alison Hinds, Calypso Rose and Kes the Band. This year the Awards categories have been reduced from 44 to 30, but allowed up to seven nominees per category. The deadline for voting at www.irawma.com is May 15, 2012.

Native Rhythms Productions’ recently signed Soul & Ragga singer, Nkulee Dube, is hard at work preparing for the release of her debut album in May this year before embarking on a European tour, which starts at the Africa Festival, Wursburg, Germany on 2 – 5 June 2011.

In its 23rd year, this international Afro music festival is the biggest of its kind in Europe and draws over 100 000 visitors over 3 days. Nkulee Dube’s appearance and performance at this year’s prestigious festival will follow on the footsteps of her late father Lucky Dube (who was a regular at the festival), the late Mirriam Makeba, Youssou N’Dour, Oumu Sangare, Salif Keita, Vusi
Mahlasela, and has included artists from Africa and the Diaspora. On four stages more than 250 musicians and dancers will give an insight into the fascinating diversity of the traditional and modern black music.

This year, the Africa Festival will go on a journey to different islands of the Caribbean. Musicians, artists and DJs from Aruba, Barbados, Curaçao, Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago – to name just a few – will present the culture and music of their countries, which were the landing places for African slave ships from the 16th to the 19th century. Nkulee Dube will share the main
stage on 5 June 2011 with Europe´s most known Reggae singer Tilman Otto aka Gentleman, a regular at the biggest Reggae events of all continents.

Nkulee Dube, whose music fuses ethno-soul ragga, as well as Afro-soul with glides and slides with ease in between her songs as she traverses between ragga and ethno-soul as if she was born on stage. Nkulee Dube has already attracted a lot of followers in countries such as she has performed at major festivals in Australia, Holland, Papau New Guinea, French Gayana as part of her late father’s band ‘One People Band’.

Nkulee has already appeared in a compilation album released by Sillywalks Entertainment in Germany, where her song ‘Give it to me’ is amongst the world greatest reggae and ragga compilations albums, which includes such artists such as Sizla. Sillywalks Productions has already contributed two songs on Nkulee Dube’s upcoming album, to be released by Native Rhythms and Sony Music.

Native Rhythms will be concluding a booking agency agreement for Nkulee Dube in France and Germany soon, in preparation for her European Tour.

Shanghai Expo

Native Rhythms does South Africa proud at the Shanghai Expo

It’s been a good year for Native Rhythms and its artists. Native Rhythms was appointed to plan and executive the cultural and music programme at the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.

The Shanghai Expo, which started in May and will only finish in October this year, has seen an array of artists performing at dedicated South African concerts coinciding with its national days. South Africa’s Mandela Day, July 18, also saw Zuluboy and Pu2ma joining artists such as Gloria Bosman, Afro Tenors, Tidal Waves and Blk Jks. Zuluboy rocked the Mandela Concert whilst Pu2ma performed at the infamous JZ Club where crème de la crème of jazz musicians have set foot. Read more »

Native Rhythms Productions, the pioneer of South Africa’s Afro and ethno Soul music genre, is set to dominate at some of this year’s major music festivals. A total of five Native Rhythms artists are billed to perform at three major festivals in and around Johannesburg, starting with the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, followed by the Tribute Concert at Moretele Park in Mamelodi and finishing with the Johannesburg Arts Alive festival. Moshito Music Conference and Exhibition

Native Rhythms stand was an absolute hit at this year’s Moshito Music Conference at Bassline, Newtown. Pu2ma and Vuyo Tyolo, Native Rhythms’ newest artists spent two days at Moshito, meeting and building new audiences. A surprise visit by the Gauteng Province MEC for Arts, Sport and Recreation to the stand was the highlight, as well as that by Black Moses (Soul Brothers), iHhashi eLimhlope and Ebony, together with SAMPA members China and Morris Roda, Arnold Mabunda of Gallo Music Publishers.
